Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a wonderfully relaxing technique to receive as well as remarkably effective for a variety of complaints including post surgery swelling, fluid build up in the joints and various other complaints. The lymphatic system processes lymphatic fluid containing bacteria, toxins, foreign substances and fatty acids throughout the body at a rate of 2-4 liters per day. This lymphatic fluid passes through hundreds of lymph nodes for purification and detoxification and is assisted through the system by muscular movement and gentle skin pressure. There are a number of situations in which MLD would be particularly indicated : women who have lost lymph nodes due to breast surgery for instance, may have fluid build up and swelling which is greatly relieved by this gentle technique. In addition, edema due to injury as well as post surgery swelling can be relieved by the increased circulation of lymph flow promoted by MLD. MLD can soften subcutaneous tissue to prevent scarring, stimulate the immune system to help combat infections, facilitate faster healing and help reduce surgical adhesions. My clients have experienced relief of sinus problems, weight loss following surgery due to edema, faster healing post surgically and a feeling of increased energy and well being. It is a technique that can be used on anyone but is not the treatment of choice for those suffering from lymphoma or Elephantiasis - these clients should seek out a trained Vodder specialist.
